The SRISO team recently met with Congresswoman Sara Jacobs to discuss the growing need for affordable housing in San Diego and explore opportunities for future projects that could benefit refugee, immigrant, and other underserved families in our community.
During the meeting, we discussed federal affordable housing programs and funding opportunities, legislative initiatives supported by Congresswoman Jacobs’ office, and the important role community-based organizations can play in developing practical housing solutions.
Affordable housing is one of SRISO’s long-term priorities. Many of the families we serve face high rental costs, limited housing availability, language barriers, and difficulty navigating complex housing systems. These challenges place families at greater risk of displacement and homelessness while making it harder for them to build stable lives in San Diego.
SRISO is taking concrete steps toward participating in the development of affordable and transitional housing for families in our community. We are building relationships with experienced housing developers, architects, public agencies, elected officials, and community partners to better understand available resources and create sustainable solutions.
Our conversation with Congresswoman Jacobs also highlighted the importance of ensuring that the needs and experiences of refugee and immigrant families are represented in discussions about future housing policies, projects, and funding opportunities.
In addition, we discussed federal immigration matters affecting residents of her district and opportunities to collaborate on issues that are important to Ukrainian and other immigrant families. The meeting opened the door to continued communication, potential letters of support for future SRISO initiatives, and new community partnerships.
